Chinese authorities have tightened their control over the internet

The editor of a Chinese website has been sentenced to six years in prison for writing articles criticising the government, Chinese media have said.

Zhang Jianhong was accused of inciting subversion and defaming the government, the official Xinhua news agency said.

A media rights group said Mr Zhang was arrested last September after posting articles demanding the release of jailed political dissidents.

Chinese authorities have moved recently to tighten control over the internet.

Mr Zhang spent 18 months in a labour camp for his role in the Tiananmen protests, the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said.
